A Better USA?

Journal Entry: Fri Nov 7, 2008, 12:41 PM
  • Mood: Optimism

Yes, I'm gonna

talk about Obama winning the selection. First, these are my opinions, and if you don't like what you hear then you can kiss my ass. I am not trying to offend anyone, I just want to share my thoughts, and I will be happy to read and listen to your comments. And I'm gonna be frank through this, ok. First, I want to say; I am norwegian. I've never been in the US, but let me tell you; there has been no other country in the world that has pissed me off as much as USA. And I'm not saying I hate all Americans. I've met a few of you, in my country, and my impression is that you're very open and so very friendly. I have friends here on DA that are from the US, and they are all lovely people! So, do I hate americans? No, I don't. But your country surely has suffered like hell itself through Bush's rule for over 8 years now! I seriously thought, with all this shit happening, with the people of the US who hold the power, the damned republicans and so on, bombing just to get some oil... I had lost every freaking belief in your country.

So, as this selection came up, and I knew Obama was up for selection, I thought 'that guy doesn't have a snowflake chance in hell.' Why? Because arent' most of the people in the higher order of USA freaking white guys who would shoot their asses off before ever allowing a black person to be president? And even though Obama perhaps would get the most votes, I was even convinced that somehow someone would start screwing with the numbers, and like some miracle; McCain would win. I had no, and I mean absolutely, NO belief that Obama would win, even though I hoped for it.

A few nights ago, late at night, I was just watching some TV before I got to bed, and I stopped by CNN or NBC or whatever and I see with large letters; VICTORY FOR OBAMA. And my first thought is "What, he got most votes in maybe one state?". So I leave the remote, and I watch. And soon I see McMain holding a speach, and he's congratulating Obama as the new president of the United States. I swear, my freaking jaw dropped down to the floor.

I may not know much about politics, or about you Americans, but I believe that Bush have single handedly fucked up your country in 8 years more than any man could ever had done through a lifetime. And now, with all my faith in the US blown out of the window, Obama is to become the first black american president. So, I guess what I try to say is; You proved me wrong. I have great hopes that this man will do as he promise; change your country for the better. And he does not only have responsibility for the US, his rule is something that will effect the entire world.

All you people in USA:
I share your joy. <3

you honestly have no idea how proud i am to look forward to having a president that can... you know... SPEAK. READ. DO BASIC THINGS THAT ANY PRESIDENT SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO, UNLIKE BUSH.

i didn't vote. neither obama or mccain got my vote, but i think i'm much more content to see obama take the lead. plus, history was made. it's pretty epic.
i have a few qualms with obama, but honestly... we all have to wait and see. i still feel pretty optimistic about having him in office once january rolls around. he's an excellent speaker and his speeches are so well done, we can all just hope that he lives up to at least some of what he says. still, there's really just something about obama that makes me feel hopeful about the future. C:

however, i don't think bush was the worst president. did he poorly represent our country? absolutely. i just think he got the short end of the stick. when everything goes to shit, unfortunately, the president gets most of the blame.
not to say that some of the situation wasn't his fault, but that's typically what happens. i agree with an above comment about bush's administration being the villain, not just bush.

NONETHELESS, i'm proud to know that there won't be anymore of mr. shrub making america look absolutely terrible. cuz... we're not that bad. :< haha.

Yes, read and speak is not such unclever things to be able to do!
You know I watched a clip where Bush was supposed to hold a speach of some sort, and for one minute, and I mean one freaking minute, all he could press out from his brain was "Um.... uuuuhhh... Ummm..." I am not kidding you, I almost pissed my pants. Then, after one minut of "Ummm..." he said "I'm sorry, I don't know." and he left! How can a guy that dim become president??

I'm inCanada, Quebec to be more specific, and even if I don't know a single thing about politics in America, I'm glad he won. I just hope some stupid gang won't be able to kill him. I think he's really gonna change something, and he's gonna be better than Bush for sure.

I wish people in my country were smarter and didn't vote for Harper....Bleh. :XD:

I truely find it amazing how even those outside of my country can see hope in a new president. It's depressing to know how many countries despise the United States, and some extremist people hate all Americans because of it. Bush ran a poor administration and I really do hope to see great change in this nation. However, unlike you I was not surprised to see that Obama won, but I still hold the same hopes that he will bring peace and wealth and dignity back to the US.

I have to say that I do not agree with all of your views here. Although I may be young, I followed the election closely too. (Side note: I didn't get to vote by being too young for nine months.....)

Bush wasn't the best president, but he was far from the worst. With my in depth AP History study of the presidents and the fact we had to rate every stinkin one, I'd say he was in the average category (maybe below average but I wouldn't personally go that far). If you hated Bush, there would be presidents that you would imagine their demise with a smile on your face (trust me, I do this myself. Jackson was one of my most hated along with Buchanan).

My main point I wish to make is this: although most people don't think this it isn't entirely Bush's fault. The modern day American president has about as much power as a kid's pet hamster does. All he can really do is suggest things to congress. In my opinion, congress is the real villain. Lets face it, congress is as nasty as parliament. Although there are checks and balances, they have been disrupted as of late. The president can't even send troops overseas without congressional permission anymore. He has pretty much no purpose except for:
1. Suggest what laws congress should look into passing. (Key word is suggest.)
2. Appoint justices and such, but only with congressional approval.
3. Take all blame and/or praise for any events in any of the three governmental branches (even if he had nothing to do with it).

Yeah, that's pretty much it. I blame Bush slightly but not as much as congress. Also, a funny fact is that his administration got worse and worse as the congress changed. 'Tis a fact.

Note: I was not trying to be mean or offensive in any way. These are my personal views on America's gov't, nothing more.

It's great that Obama won! I didn't think America was ready for a black president but they sure as hell proved me wrong. I have a sinking feeling that he's gonna be assassinated though! >.<

One of the things I wanted most out of this election was the potential to show the rest of the world what the American people are really about.. some sort of redemption for the ineptitude of our current president, who couldn't even be called a leader. Not to mention, he and most of his party make such a horrible name for us in the world. His cowbioy diplomacy has gotten us this shoot-from-the-hip, ignorant redneck stereotype that drives me mad.

There are so many people that are wonderful and diverse, but red and blue, so to speak, have been split 50-50 and for some reason the blue side, the progressive side, kept losing out. So we all ended up looking like dicks.

I love Obama, and I got chills when I was able to fill in my ballot bubble for him. He has so much pressure domestically and abroad to clean up so many messes.. it makes you wonder how one man can do it all. But with time and cooperation from our best on brightest on both sides, I think he has the intelligence and wherewithal to do it. I just hope that he gets the full span of years to do so because I think he'll need it.

It's truly a wonderous time for a large majority of the country.. people were partying like it was new years day because in a way, it was a new lease on life for us. Everyone's been abuzz all week. It just feels.. different.

So, reading posts and thoughts from those abroad fills me with happiness, because its wonderful to know that the rest of the world can still have faith we can be better because we made the right decision (and didn't get cheated..).

You have no idea how happy I am about Obama winning. It was the first year I got to vote, and I'm quite pleased with the results!
Bush's approval rating has gone down to 28%. Almost enough to make me feel bad, but.. nope. Haha.

I'm also glad to see that this change is helping to alter other country's opinion about the US. I always wonder what other countries think.
