A Better USA?

Journal Entry: Fri Nov 7, 2008, 12:41 PM
  • Mood: Optimism

Yes, I'm gonna

talk about Obama winning the selection. First, these are my opinions, and if you don't like what you hear then you can kiss my ass. I am not trying to offend anyone, I just want to share my thoughts, and I will be happy to read and listen to your comments. And I'm gonna be frank through this, ok. First, I want to say; I am norwegian. I've never been in the US, but let me tell you; there has been no other country in the world that has pissed me off as much as USA. And I'm not saying I hate all Americans. I've met a few of you, in my country, and my impression is that you're very open and so very friendly. I have friends here on DA that are from the US, and they are all lovely people! So, do I hate americans? No, I don't. But your country surely has suffered like hell itself through Bush's rule for over 8 years now! I seriously thought, with all this shit happening, with the people of the US who hold the power, the damned republicans and so on, bombing just to get some oil... I had lost every freaking belief in your country.

So, as this selection came up, and I knew Obama was up for selection, I thought 'that guy doesn't have a snowflake chance in hell.' Why? Because arent' most of the people in the higher order of USA freaking white guys who would shoot their asses off before ever allowing a black person to be president? And even though Obama perhaps would get the most votes, I was even convinced that somehow someone would start screwing with the numbers, and like some miracle; McCain would win. I had no, and I mean absolutely, NO belief that Obama would win, even though I hoped for it.

A few nights ago, late at night, I was just watching some TV before I got to bed, and I stopped by CNN or NBC or whatever and I see with large letters; VICTORY FOR OBAMA. And my first thought is "What, he got most votes in maybe one state?". So I leave the remote, and I watch. And soon I see McMain holding a speach, and he's congratulating Obama as the new president of the United States. I swear, my freaking jaw dropped down to the floor.

I may not know much about politics, or about you Americans, but I believe that Bush have single handedly fucked up your country in 8 years more than any man could ever had done through a lifetime. And now, with all my faith in the US blown out of the window, Obama is to become the first black american president. So, I guess what I try to say is; You proved me wrong. I have great hopes that this man will do as he promise; change your country for the better. And he does not only have responsibility for the US, his rule is something that will effect the entire world.

All you people in USA:
I share your joy. <3

I'm not offended or have anything against anyone really, but, my main thought is, "Why does our presidential election matter so much to everyone else, even people who know nothing about the US? (though they think they do)"

I also think it's strange the stereotype of the American. Because we all know that no other county has morons, assholes, and racists... Stupidity is a pandemic, and I'm afraid there is no cure no matter where you travel.

Our country is a mix of every culture, race, and creed from around the world. So... what's the problem? I'm not ignorant about what other people think of our country... I just don't care, because a majority of the time they're wrong.

Well... this started as a little comment, but I haven't typed anything in a long, long time.

For the record, Obama won both the popular and electoral votes, and he needed 270 to win (Obama got 338 by the time the counts were all tallied). This is how Bush won his last election: He got 271, although everyone else wanted John Kerry.

You explained it very well. I also didn't think Obama would have a chance (and i live in America). The only thing that pisses me off is that I believe alot of people voted for him just because he is black. I was watching the news the next day and all that was showing is everyone going, 'yay. great step for america, first black president' that's all well and good, but is anyone happy that he won because of where he stands on issues? I have no problem with him as a person. the fact that he didn't shoot off negetive adds got me.

As for the war, I didn't like it either, but now idk where i stand anymore, cus someone told me that it was a religious war, but he can't say that that was why he went to war.

i don't say any of this to offend you either..just like to see what others think of my opinions.

*cheers* I agree! Black or white - it's just skin color when you come right down to it. Beneath it, he's a person who wants to make things better here, and THAT ought to be why he was elected. It's a shame that some voted for (or possibly against) him based on skin color, but I voted for him because he was the better person for the job in my opinion. :D

thank you! i was talking to someone i kno in school the other day and they were like, what does it matter? they voted. i was like that's not what you should base your vote on!!
honestly, i don't really know where he stands on much..just a few things. but i'm not old enough to vote anyway. in our school, we hold 'mock elections' and one group put up signs for nader. they had the best slogan ever. 'don't be a hater, vote for nader!!' i laughed.

*sorry if this is a double..i have internet problems for some reason...*

Exactly! It's great to see higher than normal voter turnouts, but it would be nicer to know that everyone voted the way they did because they thought they were voting for the right person based on their standings on things...or even because they disagreed with one or the other less. No one person is going to please everyone, unfortunately, but if you vote based on skin color...that doesn't tell you anything about the person underneath or how they'd do as President for the next 4 years. :)

o_O Bush isn't as old as McCain. He was like 54/55 when he was inaugurated. Plus, look at his father, he's still around and so is his mother.
